COMING ATTRACTIONS: On Sunday, April 14, come join Mike and Gail and the rest of the Hillsborough Classic Film Society to watch “The Third Man.” The setting is post-war Vienna, partitioned into American, British, French and Soviet sectors and strewn with rubble from Allied bombing during the war. Many necessities—food, medical materials—are in short supply; as always, there are those who would take advantage. The movie was one of Roger Ebert’s favorites: “Of all the movies I have seen, this one most completely embodies the romance of going to the movies.” He included it in his list of “The Ten Greatest Films,” published in 1991. Awards include the Grand Prix du Festival, Cannes, 1949; Oscar, Best B&W Cinematography, 1951; Best British Film, BAFTA, 1950; Best Film, Any Source, BAFTA, 1950. It was an official selection for the Cannes Classics in 2015. Ken Wetherington will say a few words about the film beforehand and lead discussion afterwards. THE THIRD MAN. British, 1949.
